WWE Friday Night SmackDown! is a professional wrestling television program for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) currently it is the only television broadcast for the SmackDown! brand. From its launch in 1999, SmackDown! was shown on Thursday nights, but as of September 9, 2005, the show moved to Friday nights. To reflect this change, the show is now referred to as Friday Night SmackDown!. The SmackDown! brand is currently one of WWE’s three brands, the other two being RAW and ECW.

SmackDown! as it was originally titled first appeared on April 29, 1999 as a single television special on UPN. On August 26, 1999, SmackDown! officially debuted on UPN, in Kansas City, Missouri. Like WCW Thunder, SmackDown! was recorded on Tuesdays and then broadcast on Thursdays. The new WWF show was so popular that WCW moved Thunder to Wednesdays in the hope of holding on to fans rather than losing them to WWF. SmackDown!, like Thunder, made heavy use of the color blue.

The first SmackDown! set was unique as it featured an oval-shaped TitanTron (which was dubbed the “OvalTron”), entrance and stage which made it stand out from the Raw set and its rectangular TitanTrons. An added feature to the original set was the ability for the OvalTron to be moved to either the left or right of the stage. Throughout the show’s early existence, top WWF superstar The Rock routinely called SmackDown! “his” show, in reference to the fact that the name was derived from one of his catchphrases, “Laying the smackdown.” In August 2001, as part of celebrating SmackDown!’s second anniversary, the show received a new logo and set. The last SmackDown! to use the previous television set saw Alliance member Rhyno Gore WWF member Chris Jericho through the center screen, destroying part of the set.

    World Wrestling Entertainment has announced that it will no longer air Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW after it failed to reach a new deal with the netlet this week. While analysts have suspected that the WWE will eventually land at NBC’s USA Network, there was no official confirmation from the wrestling organization about a new home. Smackdown had been a solid performer for the CW and its predecessor the UPN since 1999, but with a new focus on female-centric programming (America’s Next Top Model, Gossip Girl), wrestling didn’t seem the best fit for the fledgling network.

  2. MyNetworkTV Plans to Lay the SmackDown

    Hold on to your spandex! World Wrestling Entertainment will be bringing their wrestlers to MyNetworkTV in fall 2008. The general entertainment network will become the exclusive prime-time broadcasting home for WWE SmackDown, a weekly, two-hour program featuring the blood, sweat and cleavage of all the WWE’s top superstars. SmackDown has become one of the most highly watched programs on broadcast television among men during its nine-year existence, previously airing on UPN and the CW as Friday Night SmackDown! The WWE reaches 16 million viewers weekly with Smackdown and two other cable shows, Monday Night Raw on USA Network and ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling on the SciFi Channel.

    Ab dem 9. September 2005 wurde SmackDown! von UPN freitags ausgestrahlt. Mit dem Sendeplatzwechsel wurde die Show von der WWE in Friday Night SmackDown! umbenannt und bekam gleichzeitig auch ein neues Logo. Seit dem 18. September 2006 läuft SmackDown! in den USA auf dem CW Network, nachdem die beiden großen amerikanischen Sender UPN und The WB zusammengelegt worden waren.

    Seit dem 25. Januar 2008 laufen alle WWE-Folgen (RAW, ECW und SmackDown!) in HD.

    Ab Herbst 2008 wird SmackDown! nicht mehr auf CW Network zu sehen sein. Am 26. Februar gab man bekannt, dass die Sendung dann auf MyNetworkTV laufen wird.

  5. In Deutschland laufen die Ausgaben derzeit beim DSF. SmackDown! wird samstags von 22.00 bis 23.00 Uhr ausgestrahlt; die Wiederholung läuft am Dienstagabend zur gleichen Uhrzeit. Am Sonntagabend um 22.00 Uhr werden manchmal Folgen, die schon mehrere Monate alt sind, ausgestrahlt.
